Australian coastline at golden hour

G'day.
Welcome to Australia.

Everything you need to plan a trip, or a whole new life, down under.

Quick facts

26 million people

Most live along the coast in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The capital is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

Currency: AUD

Cards and tap-to-pay are accepted almost everywhere. Tipping is optional and not common, except to acknowledge great restaurant service.

Seasons flipped

Summer runs December to February and can be very hot. The tropical north has wet and dry seasons. In winter there sometimes is snow in the south mountain regions.

Drive on the left

Cars are right hand drive and you stay left. Many overseas licences are valid for visitors. If your licence is not written in English, you must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official English translation. Rental cars are readily available. Distances are huge, so take care and plan rest stops.

Sun is serious

UV is extreme. Always wear a shirt, hat and SPF50 sunscreen. Swim between the flags at the beach and only swim at lifeguard patrolled beaches.

Emergency: 000

Police, fire and ambulance, dial 000.
