Moving

Making Australia home

The essentials for your first months, from finding a place to love to getting a tax file number and finding work.

Housing

Search realestate.com.au and Domain for rental properties. Expect to pay a bond of about 4 weeks' rent once approved as a tenant. Leases are usually 6 or 12 months.

Work

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) online, you must get one. Seek and LinkedIn are the main job boards. Superannuation is paid on top of wages (or be careful to check if its included in your wage or hourly rate). If you are a recent graduate or executive in banking, finance, insurance, technology, risk or compliance sectors, you might want to talk to Closer Than You Think Coaching.

Healthcare

Medicare covers citizens, residents and some reciprocal countries. Most visa holders need private cover. More details are here.

Banking

Open an account with one of the big four banks or a digital bank. CBA is the largest. Many banks let you start the process to open an account before you arrive.

Phone & internet

Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are the main phone companies. There are also cheaper resellers. Prepaid SIMs and phone contracts need identification.

Cost of living

Sydney and Melbourne are priciest cities. Regional areas can be cheaper and may offer visa benefits. As an example take a look at Wollongong.
